Last week the Level Three Commerce and Geography classes went on a joint field trip to Queenstown. Commerce students were focusing on innovation within businesses and Geography students were focusing on tourism development.
Students explored Forest Lodge Orchard in Cromwell, the world's first 100% fossil fuel-free orchard. Led by Euan, they learned about innovative practices like UFO planting for cherry trees which results in higher yields and superior fruit quality. Euan also highlighted their pioneering status as the world's first electric orchard, which allows them to command a premium for their crop.
After a chilly start to Thursday, all students spent the morning conducting surveys of the public around the Queenstown CBD and later Five Mile shopping centre. Shane from AJ Hackett spoke to students about the journey the AJ Hackett brand has been through from their inception 36 years ago to today. He spoke of the development of the Kawarau site, their relationship with the Department of Conservation, who own the bridge, and receive a portion of their profits. AJ Hackett has added new activities, such as the zipline and cafe to capture the 90% of tourists who visit the site but don’t bungy jump.
Commerce students had the opportunity to visit Penelope Johnson, a successful local business woman. She spoke to the students about her journey in the hospitality industry and how following your passion and hard work can lead to a rewarding career.
Geography students visited the Arrowtown museum where they learnt about the five stages Queenstown's development has been through since the 1800s and the impacts these have had on the environment.
Peter from Queenstown Lakes District Council then spoke to the students about the role tourism has had on the economy and the impacts of Covid on this.
Thank you to all those who took the time to speak with our students!
