I am honoured to have been awarded the role of Deputy Sacristan this year. Working alongside Georgia is a huge privilege and I am excited to see what this year holds both for us and the wider chapel committee.
I arrived at Craighead in 2018 as a tiny and very shy Year 7 student, knowing only a few people. Unsure what I was passionate about, I first headed straight for music and the performing arts, being involved in choir, junior choir, string group, orchestra, theatre sports and showquest throughout my time here. Upon discovering the huge range of other activities Craighead offered, I decided to try a bit of everything, from Kapa haka to debating to even a few social sports teams. I have since narrowed this long list down to better focus on my passions of music, languages, maths and sciences.
I started out as a daygirl, but began boarding in late Year 10, and even though it was a change not seeing my family every day, the close friendships formed since being in the boarding house have been extremely valuable and I look forward to returning from next term. Being in the boarding house has taught me super important life skills which will hopefully make the transition to halls and flats at University a bit easier.
Growing up in a Christian family, it has always been an important part of my life, and throughout my time at Craighead, my involvement in the Chapel committee and wider church community has led to me being offered some amazing opportunities in the school and beyond, which have helped shape my faith immensely. I always admired the kindness the different sacristans showed to me growing up, and this year I hope to be able to pass some of that on through this role.
Although I am not completely sure what my plans are for next year, at this stage I intend either to head to Otago University as a HSFY student, or else study nursing in Christchurch. I am forever grateful to all my amazing teachers I have had throughout my seven years here for providing me with the skills and knowledge to be able to follow my passions once I am finished at Craighead, and I encourage all the current students to make the most of their time here as we are very lucky to have such great teachers.
Ngā mihi,
Sophie Kane
