The final Oamaru Schools Chess Tournament of the year took place recently with 67 students from 11 schools competing. In the Primary and Intermediate division, the winner of the division and overall winner of the competition was Caleb MacDonald from Oamaru Intermediate School, second and top female was Lauren Crawford from Craighead.
Lauren did really well at the Oamaru Summer Chess Tournament held at Waitaki Boys. They all played in one big tournament and then split the results into ‘Seniors’ and ‘Intermediate & Junior’ for the prizegiving. Lauren won 6 out of her 7 games. There was another intermediate boy who also won 6 out of 7 so they were tied for first. When it’s a tie the computer looks at all the games played by both players, their opponents and ratings and decided that Lauren came 2nd overall. No sharing the win in chess!
Well done Lauren!
